Yes, technology slowly evolves (hence "evolution") into more advanced features. In this case, most of the underlying architecture is already there but has yet to be realized.

It also could be that my idea is really a trivial step to something much better.

The iPhone is a great example of this kind of blended layering and may offer a glimpse of ubiquity for centralizing communications.

You're correct. Creating a layer and adding a mouse-click event that tells the OS to dial a string of numbers (whether they're an IP address of another computer or a telephony series of digits) is actually quite simple stuff to a novice programmer (think about it, voice recognition that comes in most cell phones is relatively harder than telling the OS to dial the number associated to a picture with a physical mouse click)
But to the average consumer not aware of underlying technologies (aka. 'behind the scenes') they really would see this as an "evolution".

The 64 bit version is nice to run. I have installed it and played with it a bit. The issues are foundational. Drivers for all hardware and devices HAVE to 64 in order for it to work.
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista_ff_x64.asp

So basically, they had to rewrite the OS. It also appears that Microsoft is quickly working on Fiji (http://www.vistasp1.net/) and Vienna.

I agree Microsoft is still behind the OS curve.. I have the beta of vista and it seems like windows xp with a face lift. nothing really added to the os that blows my mind... it does not really have any major catch factor to upgrade to it from windows xp... the only reason why im really interested in it is because of the 64 bit version of the os

there's like 4 other MySpace hacks. One of which embeds a music file (that points to a file that doesn't exist, until days later when the user decides to upload the file). Then another makes a picture 9999 by 9999 (which will take forever to scroll). The two others are a little more difficult to explain.

Sounds interesting. Too bad the only thing I every use word for is to check my spelling. Probably not a product I'll spend money on.
